As a lot of the industry prepares to cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, I can’t help but notice the missing piece of the puzzle… experienced crew member’s looking positions. Of course, experienced crew rarely “Look for work” it finds them, but the number of experienced crew is not significantly lacking.
Are you the bosun who wants to step up and has the knowledge but not the ticket?
Sign up for the courses, get the ticket.
Are you the second engineer to comfortable in your role?
Believe in yourself that there is more than cleaning grey balls, changing filters and filling the water tanks.
Are you the solo Stewardess, wanting to expand your knowledge of wine?
Sign up for the course, speak to your superior about diversifying your experience.
The way to fill the gap of experience crew member’s is to become one. Expand your knowledge, use the crew training budget to expand your knowledge to benefit the current yacht in the short term but benefit your career by enhancing industry knowledge.
What makes an experienced crew member:
- Industry knowledge: Grasping outside of the scope of their department, supporting the managerial aspect of the yacht they work on and growing into that role.
- Emotional Intelligence: Living and working onboard can be hard, an experienced crew member has the knowledge to guide and support others around them.
- Professional integrity: Doing the job to the highest possible level and then a little more. When you are present and onboard you take pride in your work and the work of others and respect it.
- Longevity: Unless you choose to freelance and state it on your cv, then longevity is key, these are no longer the days of one year is seen as a long time. Yachts look for two or more years. The best way to demonstrate your experience is time.
