A long-standing tradition in yachting, right from the early days of luxury yachts couples have worked together to run a yacht for the owner. This was very popular in the less than 100ft range and tends to be more on sail yachts. Often these yachts are run with one or maybe two other crew. In recent years with the yachts getting larger and larger it has become common place to recruit a couple on larger yachts, the roles often being a chief stewardess and a captain or the chef and the engineer.

In the duration of my time in the industry I’ve worked with quiet a few couples and had great experiences as they blended into the crew well and were solid in the relationships before joining a vessel.

Although getting into these positions onboard is not an easy fate, the recruitment process for a couple can be difficult.

  1. A polished and tidy joint CV, with a well-rounded description of both your experiences. Underlying any previous work together, to illustrate to future employers that you have been hired as a couple and are reliable.
  2. A well written a personal cover letter, giving some insight into your personal relationship, conveying to the future employers how stable and strong your relationship is.
  3. References from previous work experience together and separately this is key in order to show you work well together as well as separately.
  4. Up to date qualifications, passports and visas, don’t hold yourself back by not having the same visa as your partner. A B1/B2 visa will widen your options.

Working in a couple can allow some of yachting’s best to elongate their career in yachting, working onboard can be hard, so having your significant other beside you in the hard times makes it seem easier. So many crew leave yachting because they miss having a personal relationship’s and time with family.
